This month, get to know Diane:

Diane and her husband are all smiles!
Name: Diane Vaughn Lane (aka Dee Dee)

Age: 50

I live in: Wall, N.J.

I started going to Dr. Stern: 23 years ago

While in his care: I had many repairs to old filings, root canals, caps, extra cleanings due to Sjorgrens Syndromen (chronic dry mouth), many attempts to lighten an injured front continually darkening tooth. I finally was able to have Dr. Alan repair/apply eight overlays on my upper front teeth. (Interested  in Diane’s smile transformation? Click here.)

My favorite thing about my new smile is: that I no longer have to think before I smile. No longer do I hide behind my hand while talking or laughing. I love that the finished product is so natural that friends cannot tell exactly what is different about me. I told only a few people I was having my teeth fixed. People think I lost weight or changed my hair color.

Dr. Stern is a stand-out dentist because: He is a funny guy, but the minute it is time to discuss your care, he is honest and straight forward about what he feels needs to be done to take care of your teeth. He understands the financial circumstances of his patients as well, and works with you to prioritize your care. Things have a way of working out. When this project of fixing my smile became possible financially, I was also at the point where I REALLY needed to do something about the “dead” front tooth, on a clinical level. Dr. Alan and Fran walked me through the physical and emotional steps of the process. To undertake the procedure physically was only half the project; the emotions that came with me being able to actually fix my smile played a role in the process, too. Dr. Alan and Fran took great effort and worked and directed me on the color picking. Who knew that would be such an important choice? I trusted their experience and I have to say that for me, my teeth are a natural color for a woman of my age! The day this process was complete, the three of us were like school children on the last day of school. I couldn’t tell you which one of us was more excited!

When it comes to oral healthcare, Dr. Stern taught me: FLOSSING IS MOST IMPORTANT!

When it comes to a healthy smile and good oral healthcare, I tell my friends and family: I try to refer everyone I can to Dr. Alan. I always say, “He gives the best needles—you don’t know you are getting one.” With my experience, I should know!

Ocean, NJ Dentist | Season in the Sun: Top Tips for Keeping Your Teeth Sparkling All Summer Long

If you fear your pearly whites are losing their luster, don’t fret: You can mellow the yellow and keep them grin-worthy glistening by following these tips:

Avoid major stain culprits like coffee, tea, red wine, sports drinks and sodas. If you drink these beverages, rinse your mouth with water right afterward and consider drinking with a straw, which will reduce how much of the liquid comes into contact with your teeth. You should wait to brush about a half an hour after drinking (or eating) something acidic, as the acid weakens tooth enamel and brushing too soon can damage the enamel.

Keep up with your regular cleanings. That fresh feeling your teeth get when you’ve had a professional cleaning is tough to replicate—and removing harmful deposits from your teeth and gums keeps your mouth healthy, which in turn keeps your teeth brighter longer. “Regular dental visits not only help your smile look better; they also help to catch problems at an early stage and to keep the bacteria in your mouth from wreaking havoc with your mouth and your entire body,” says Dr. Stern.

Practice good oral hygiene. Cleanings are only every so often, so you have to maintain your teeth at home, too—brush at least twice a day and floss at least once (this part’s really important, so don’t skip it!) to keep that sparkly look.

Stay away from tobacco. Smoking causes persistent, hard-to-clean stains on your teeth (in addition to gum disease and a host of other negative health effects you’ve heard about before). If you need another reason to quit, this is a good one.

Eat your fruits and veggies. Carrots, celery, apples and pears promote salivation, which helps clean your teeth and neutralize the acids in your mouth that promote decay. Not all produce is created equal, though—brightly colored fruits like blueberries and cherries can have a staining effect. Just remember to rinse your mouth with water and thoroughly brush and floss after consuming these vibrant foods.

Consider a whitening treatment. We offer options to freshen up your smile at a range of price points, with pre-formed trays filled with whitening solution, trays custom-fit to your mouth or an in-office power bleaching. Get more details here. All provide results that will last, particularly if you follow the tips above.

Come on in! A pleasing smile not only makes a great impression on other people; it also adds to your self-esteem and confidence. Keeping your mouth healthy and clean goes a long way. Adds Dr. Stern: “If your teeth are not looking their very best, please ask how we can best help. There are so many ways to improve your smile for just about every budget and desire.”
